Background
of ‘6Pence’:
Seeing the need for young musicians to be trained in the different facets
of music ministry,
‘6Pence Catholic Music Ministry’ was formed in early 2004
by a group of seven Catholic musicians in the Auckland Diocese. Over
a year of discernment and consultation, the following vision and mission
was created for the ministry:
VISIONS:
For every Catholic Parish and Community in New Zealand to be served
effectively by faithful,
liturgically informed and competent musicians.
MISSION:
To help develop young Catholic musicians in their faith, excellence
in their musicianship, enhancement
of their liturgical knowledge, and service within their communities.
This vision was brought to life in 2004 with the inaugural conference
and a 5 week follow-up block
workshop. Through these workshops and the conference, young musicians
have received practical
information from various Catholic speakers and experienced musicians
on subjects such as
musicianship, the role of musicians within the Mass, the importance
of personal faith in ministry
and introductory catechesis.
In bringing young musicians together, the 6pence vision is that they
will then return to their Parishes
and communities equipped to serve with the skills and knowledge gained.
AFFILIATION:
Based in Auckland, 6pence music ministry is under the guidance and support
of the Auckland
Diocesan Catholic Youth Ministry Support team. Our spiritual director
is Fr. Craig Dunford of
St Patrick’s Cathedral, and the ministry has also received the
blessing of Bishop Patrick Dunn.
SUPPORT 6PENCE
As a non-profit organisation,
6pence runs solely on the generous support of personal
donations and various fundraising ventures throughout the year. Please
consider if you would like to support 6pence, either by making a donation
or helping us with undertaking fundraising.
It costs approximately $12,000
to run the Elevate conference. A large portion of these funds are spent
on hiring venues, professional tutors and speakers for the various events,
sponsorship of conference leaders and subsidising the conference fee
for participants. 6pence aims to fundraise as much as possible to ensure
the conference and workshop participants do not carry all these costs,
and the ministry has been very blessed by continual support of various
people and parishes, so we pray for God’s continual provision
in this area.
Tax deductible donations (all donations over $5) can be made by cheque
to Auckland Youth Ministry Support. Post this to: 6pence
